Shanghai revives its night economy with 200 events

Shanghai city launched a series of night events called "Shanghai Tonight" on June 6, 2026. As part of the program, around 200 events will be held in shopping malls, coastal areas, parks, museums, and neighborhoods. The events are under the slogan "Beyond Expectation" as part of the Shanghai Shopping Festival and Summer Consumption.

What happened? On June 6, 2026, Shanghai launched the "Shanghai Tonight" series of night events: approximately 200 events in shopping malls, waterfronts, parks, and neighborhoods. The program is combined with the city's Shopping Festival and Summer Consumption Season. The five main night zones feature world championship themed programs, restaurant weeks, rooftop events, and light festivals; contactless (Visa) payment has been opened for international guests.

Why is it important? This is not random festivals — it's planned night economy: gathering events in several zones to manage foot traffic, then directing it to restaurants, cafes, and retail. "Restaurant Week", rooftop, and sports viewing nights are formats that directly feed HoReCa.

Lesson for Baku The raw material is already in Baku — festivals on the Boulevard, events in Icherisheher, summer season. The difference is in preparation. An operator near an event zone should read the festival calendar as an expected demand peak and plan ahead: festival menu, extended working hours, additional staff, terrace/rooftop usage, contactless payment and reservation. Those who plan according to the calendar catch the wave; those who treat the festival as a surprise miss it.

Risk Unprepared festival = lost opportunity: demand exceeding capacity, slow service, depleted menu, long queue → customer does not return, tourist leaves with a bad impression. Conversely, overspending only for the festival and then being empty when the season ends is also a risk.
